The MAIF, as part of its growing organizational structure, is formulating a Medical Committee to promote Medical & Physical Fitness Awareness and Education in the Martial Arts Community.
Details are currently being further developed. The below information is an outline of the MAIF's Medical Committee and its functions.
- The MAIF Medical Committee will consist initially of 3-5 doctors of medicine, recommended by their national or continental federations, or by Board of MAIF who are acquainted with activities and qualifications of these individuals. The structure of MC will have at least one MD from USA (or the Pan American Union), one from the European Union and one on behalf of MAIF (representing rest of countries, such as Asian countries, etc.).
- This MC will consists of active doctors of medicine who are experienced in MAIF functions (if possible, doctors who are also coaches and/or referees within recognized and sanctioned competitions.
- MC will have its meetings during Technical Congresses and Annual Conferences, or would meet at international events such as competitions or training camps, and get invited to MAIF conventions only when needed.
- At least one member of MC (if not all) would be invited and paid to attend all major international events, such as training camps, continental championships and world championship.
- Some of the most important activities and duties of MC will be:
- a) provide urgent health care at major international events to competitors & other athletes.
- b) educate other stand-by doctors and medical personnel as related to martial art competitions.
- c) make a precise statistics of all injuries and long-term health problems caused by martial art activities, including the mechanisms, techniques and actions that caused certain injuries. (this would include both large international events and collection of reports from national team medical doctors - National Medical committees, who would be obliged to send their local statistics to the MAIF MC)
- d) Use these statistics to give recommendations to Sport Committees and Referee Committees for changing of certain rules, implementation of better protective equipment, etc.
- e) Actively co-operate with similar medical bodies within IOC.
- f) Advertise the health benefits from MAIF sport practice in front of all international sport authorities, including IOC, IWGA, GAISF, etc.
- g) Check the physical and mental state of all the competitors prior to large competitions (quick scanning), and work in co-operation with coaches on developing more effective methods of physical conditioning
- h) Give occasional education to coaches about anatomy, physiology, nutrition, basic sport medicine stress-tests (I.e. Master step test), fast treatment of injuries, etc.
- i) pay special attention to disadvantaged practitioners and possibilities of their inclusion to regular martial arts practice; give education to coaches to recognize certain medical problems which are dangerous or incompatible with any serious training (such as hemophilia, severe juvenile epilepsy, insulin-dependant diabetes mellitus, hard cases of asthma, potentially dangerous skin diseases, infective diseases, etc.)
- j) Initiate anti-doping control of all MAIF top competitors on large international events, in order to satisfy IOC rules; give education to sportsmen, coaches and other interested parties on bad effects of doping.
- k) Other functions and activities will be announced as available.
